RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE

High-performance homes

The way a home performs thermally dramatically affects how it feels to occupy. A high performance home seeks to integrate principles associated with Passivhaus construction without the additional steps required for Passivhaus certification. The may be high performance double glazing, consideration to thermal bridge free design, continuous insulation and a measured amount of airtightness in addition to appropriate ventilation, often with heat recovery.

Orientation, glazing & shade

Window size, position, frame performance and shading are assessed together. Access to daylight and winter sun needs to be balanced with protection from unwanted summer heat.

Insulation & airtightness

We consider the continuity of insulation and the air barrier, including the junctions around windows, structure and services. Thermal-bridge free design details mitigate areas where heat can bypass the continuous insulation layer.

Air quality & moisture

Ventilation, material selection and moisture management critical components of a high performance home. Given that we are creating an environment which deliberately segregates the internal and external spaces, ensuring that our internal conditions remain optimum becomes more important than if were using conventional construction methods. A deliberate strategy is needed for fresh air, wet areas and the behaviour of the building envelope.

Materials & durability

We assess materials for their suitability, maintenance, construction and contribution to the indoor environment. Natural materials are selected with the same care as any other part of the building.

Local climate

Our Mid North Coast work responds to warm, humid summers and cooler winter nights. Exposure, elevation and the immediate landscape influence the approach on each site.

High performance
or certified Passive House?

High-performance design describes an approach, rather than a single certification standard. Its targets and verification methods need to be agreed for each project. Often we find that clients are seeking to utilise principles of the Passivhaus standard but are less interested in the process of achieving the standard through independant certification.

A certified Passive House follows a defined standard and an independent assessment process. We discuss the design implications, scope and certification pathway with you early, so that your choice can inform the whole project. Our Passivhaus design service is delivered in conjunction with our architectural service in order to align performance with architectural intent throughout the project.
